Help Improve Future Homes

Help Improve Future Homes

Book an installation appointment

Himmerland Housing Association and Aalborg University are investigating how residents’ comfort preferences and everyday practices influence energy use in modern homes.

You can contribute by allowing us to install small indoor climate sensors in your home and by completing a short questionnaire.

What is the purpose?

The way people use their homes and experience comfort affects both the indoor environment and energy consumption. Calculations alone cannot fully capture what happens in occupied homes during everyday life.

By measuring indoor conditions, we can better understand the relationship between residents’ comfort, daily practices and energy use.

The knowledge gained will support the development of homes that are both more sustainable and more comfortable.

Why participate?

As a token of appreciation, every 10 participating households will be entered into a random prize draw for one gift voucher for a Cinema experience for two (2 × entry tickets, 2 × small popcorns, 2 × 0.5L soft drinks) at Nordisk Film Cinema Aalborg Kennedy Arkaden.

Participants who agree to the optional occupancy sensor will receive an additional entry in the prize draw, doubling their chances of winning.

Your privacy

The sensors are small and unobtrusive. They do not listen to conversations or capture photographs or video.

  2. 2

    During our visit

Our visit will take approximately 30 minutes. During the visit:

    • We will ask you to sign a consent form allowing Aalborg University to collect and use the measurement data for research purposes.
    • We will ask you to complete a short questionnaire about your home and your experience of indoor comfort.
    • We will install all sensors in your home
    • We will answer any questions you might have
  3. 3

    Measurements are collected

The sensors will collect measurements in your home throughout the winter and spring until summer 2027. You do not need to do anything during this period. If you move out during this period, you just leave the sensors where they are.

  4. 4

    We remove the sensors

At the end of the measurement period, we will arrange a time to visit your home and remove the sensors.

  5. 5

    Win cinema tickets

After completing the measurement period, you will be entered into a draw to win cinema tickets.

How we protect your privacy

The equipment only collects the measurements described on this page. It does not listen to conversations or capture photographs or video.

Aalborg University will process the measurement data as part of the research project. Himmerland Housing Association will not receive data about individual homes. They will only receive combined, anonymised results from multiple participating apartments.

You can find further information about how the data is used and stored, your rights and whom to contact in the project’s privacy notice. For your convenience, you can view it here. You will also receive it during sensor installation.

The bigger picture

This research is embedded in two major projects:

INBLANC is based on the fact that buildings generate vast amounts of data, yet much of it remains scattered and untapped. INBLANC aims to transform this data into meaningful insights at every stage of the building lifecycle, fostering an open ecosystem structured around the data economy.

CEBE is a 10-year research program, supported with 1 billion DKK by the Villum Foundation, to develop new knowledge and new solutions for a sustainable construction sector within planetary boundaries. The program brings together leading construction researchers from four universities (AAU, AU, SDU, and DTU) in a partnership around common goals.

By participating in this research, you can contribute to lasting, large-scale impact.
