The buildings of the future will be energy consumers, as well as distributed energy producers, by generating energy on-site from renewable sources and exchanging it with utility grids. On this background, this postdoc project brings the building and the grid perspectives together in a new building evaluation framework, which enables design of an energy optimized building that intelligently interacts with the energy distribution system. Hereby the project creates a paradigm shift in building design and performance evaluation, which puts new demands on the future buildings.

Project description

Part 1 – Hourly energy load and generation profiles

This part is dedicated to register analysis and processing of monitoring and simulated data. The purpose is to develop hourly based profiles of energy demand and energy production for typical building topologies.

Part 2 – Transient simulations of NearZEBs and power grid

Buildings are the very last element of the energy distribution system. Hence depending on the grid type, the impact of the on-site produced energy exported to the power grid is most significant and visible on low-voltage grid level. The purpose is to create models of city-centre, suburban and rural grid configurations for Danish conditions.

Part 3 – Identification of critical challenges in building-grid interaction

This part focuses on recognizing the requirements of optimal interaction viewed from the energy producing building and the low-voltage distribution grid perspective. The purpose is to identify the critical challenges that need to be addressed to reach optimal energy exchange between the building and the power grid.

Part 4 – Development of the theoretical framework and new design parameters

In this part the recognised operation strategies for the energy producing building will be depicted in new evaluation method. The purpose is to devise new set of design parameters that will be used as “interaction” performance indicators for NearZEBs.
