PhD defence: Marta Simon

Sources, Fate, and Impact of Microplastics. PhD defence organized by Department of the Built Environment.

Time

11.01.2021 kl. 09.00 - 13.00

Description

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Due to the Covid-19 situation, the PhD defence will be carried out via Microsoft Teams. Please send an email to Linda Vabbersgaard Andersen no later than 10 January 2021 and you will get an invite for the event and, if requested, a copy of the thesis.

SUMMARY OF THE THESIS

The ubiquitous presence of microplastic particles (MPs) urges the evaluation of the threat they may pose on the environment. Risk assessment of MPs requires accurate environmental concentrations and evaluation of their toxic potential. Nevertheless, due to the novelty of the research field and the lack of standard operating procedures lead to uncertainties in both MP abundance and toxicity data. The PhD aimed to contribute to the improvement of MP quantification by developing a method for their mass estimation and assessed the effect of UV-exposure, the primary weathering impact, on the identification of environmental MPs. Furthermore, it evaluated the importance of the application of weathered MPs for ecotoxicity tests.

GRADUATE PROGRAMME

Civil Engineering.

PROGRAM

09:00: Welcome by Moderator.
09:05: Lecture and presentation by PhD student (45 min).
09:50: Break. During the break, participants can email questions to the moderator, Lucia Margheritini mluc@build.aau.dk. If such are received, the questioner puts them forward after the assessment committee has finalized their question and answer round.
10:00: The assessment committee is asking questions to the work.
12:00: End of defence. The assessment committee enters another “room”, evaluates and writes the final assessment.
12:45 (approx.): The assessment committee rejoins the “Defence room” and announces its decision.
13:00: End of event.
